Disability Pride
Martina Morini Photography Exhibition
The exhibition
The last time my mother took the bus was for her middle school final exam. And then never again. First a moped, then a car straight after. My mother loses her sight in 2006, and with it part of her cherished independence. The No. 75 Carrara/Massa Via Candia is the only bus that passes in front of her house every half hour, heading straight to the centre of Massa or Carrara. At first, covering those few metres that separate her from the stop on the Aurelia frightens her, with lorries speeding past. Alone. She worries about not being able to board quickly enough, about not finding a seat, she is afraid of losing her balance. Then that journey becomes routine, that bus becomes an instrument of freedom, those people become precious allies and friends. The market, the shopping, medical appointments, a walk in the town centre. Alone or accompanied. Rain or shine. Like a wide basting stitch, the bus joins together and holds in place spaces that would otherwise be worlds apart; in turn, the stitches make the journeys tangible.
